About this deal

If you’re looking for a list of both oil-based and wax-based colored pencils, check out our list of the best colored pencils for artists instead. Personally, I love using oil-based ones rather than wax based coloured pencils, due to the texture, how they blend and the vibrance of the colours. Before I start reviewing let me first state that I am NOT an artist, I have no art training, not even an art GCSE and only started using coloured pencils again 2 months ago. Like other Faber-Castell lines, these come at a premium but for those wanting some of the best you can’t go wrong with these.

However, one of the hardest cores I have ever tested and reviewed is perhaps the Derwent Artists core and yet this is market as a wax pencil, but its hardness is down to the type of wax used, binding agent and many other factors. One of the reasons I like to use these coloured pencils is because they do not break as easily as others and maintain a sharp point, compared to wax-based pencils I’ve used. I would also strongly advise creating a colour chart with the number of each pencil and a shaded section from light to dark so that you have it to hand (see mine below).

I say Chemists, although this may not be their correct title, but the creating of a colored pencil core is quite a complex process, requiring exact ratios of ingredients that mix and bind to produce the pencils we all know and love.

The great thing about both oil and wax based colouring pencils is the lustre, intense colours and satin like finish they provide. But oil-based and wax-based pencils are not such polar opposites and can be used interchangeably without any issues. Intermediate users will enjoy using Magicfly pencils which are reviewed above, and more advanced users will enjoy using Faber-Castell Polychromos or Derwent Artists pencils, again reviewed in more detail above. If you’ve found anything on this site especially useful, you can make a donation to me through PayPal. The core of oil-based colored pencils are a bit harder than wax-based pencils, making them less susceptible to breakage. For me this was one of the most troublesome issues of me reviews, artists were so adamant in knowing if a core was wax or oil.
