A subframe is created perpendicular to your joists, leaving room over the top of your insulation material and allowing for boards to be placed on the top.

We went into full details in a previous post about loft insulation, but in short: squashing it down can reduce its effectiveness by up to 50%, which translates into significant losses for you in terms of heating bills and wasted energy. This is one of the most important steps, and it’s one that’s tripped up a lot of homeowners in the past. In fact, there is often a small gap for ventilation over the top of your insulation (we’ll talk more about this later). Even those with little DIY skills, or time, can now easily elevate the boarded section so that their loft can be used for storage whilst still having 270mm of loft insulation. The second is using 175mm or 300mm Loft Leg insulation spacers, which sit on top of your ceiling joists. The rails and supports are a bit rickety, but once the loft boards are screwed down the whole floor was solid.

Loft Legs are strong and can support weights of 500kg however, they do not change the load bearing characteristics of a loft. Therefore, boarding directly onto joists would mean in many cases having reduced insulation in between the joists (75mm – 100mm) or squashing insulation down where there is boarding from 270mm to 100mm.

Put boards on top and they now feel absolutely solid and better insulation underneath and loads more storage.
